The Brazilian government decided to require visas again for Americans, Canadians, Australians and Japanese, since the 2019 agreement was to reciprocally withdraw visas but it was not respected for Brazilians.
The President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has decided that visas will begin to be mandatory from October 1 this year, since they consider that historically relations with countries were based on the principles of reciprocity and equal treatment, the ministry said.
The move by previous president Jair Bolsonaro said the ministry was “a break from the pattern of Brazilian migration policy”. And he added that “Brazil does not offer unilateral visitor visa exemptions, without reciprocity, to other countries.”
