Before the end of the year, the sale of Banamex could be finalized: AMLO

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said on Monday that it is likely that before the end of the year the purchase of Banamex can take place and that there are three candidates interested in this transaction.

“They told me that soon (the purchase is made), which may be before the end of the year. I don’t have a date, they didn’t inform us,” the president said.

During his morning conference, the president pointed out that there were three candidates to acquire the banking institution: Grupo Financiero Inbursa, owned by Carlos Slim; German Larrea Mota Velasco and Daniel Becker.

A few days ago, Grupo Financiero Banorte announced that it would not pursue the process of buying Banamex organized by Citigroup.

López Obrador also mentioned that for the purchase of Banamex, he only asks that whoever acquires it be a Mexican group, be up to date with their taxes, that the cultural heritage of the bank remain in Mexico and that the workers not be not licensed.

Banamex has a valuation of between $12.5 trillion and $15 billion, according to an analysis paper released by Bank Of America Securities.
