Batet visits Canada to deepen parliamentary relations between the two countries

Congress President Meritxell Batet begins an official trip to Canada this Thursday to deepen parliamentary relations and strengthen dialogue and collaboration between Spain and Ottawa, at the invitation of the presidents of the two Canadian chambers.

Batet, who will remain in the North American country until this Sunday, will begin his journey in the capital, where he will visit the Senate and meet its president, George J. Furey. You will then be received in the House of Commons by Speaker Anthony Rota and have the opportunity to attend the plenary session and receive the official House salute. He will also meet Spanish-speaking parliamentarians and end his day with a visit to the National History Museum.

Already on Friday, he will meet the Minister of Culture and Heritage, Pablo Rodríguez, and later he will participate in a meeting organized by the Parliamentary Centre, one of the main non-governmental organizations dedicated to strengthening parliamentary democracy in Canada. Batet will give a lecture there on “Democratic institutions and their threats”.

He will then meet with the Chairs of the Foreign Affairs and International Trade Committees of the House of Commons and the Senate. He will then participate in a meeting on multiculturalism with the Minister of Housing, Diversity and Inclusion, Ahmed Hussein. Finally, he will open the Pablo Picasso exhibition ‘La Celestina’ at the National Archives of Canada.

On Saturday, Batet will travel to Toronto and meet with the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, Ted Arnott, and hold a meeting with representatives of the Spanish community. The trip ends on Sunday with a visit to Niagara Falls, one of the most important nature reserves in the country and where you can learn about the development of environmental policies and sustainable tourism.
