Sportswriting, April 5 (EFE).- Spanish tennis player Paula Badosa made it to the third round of the WTA 500 tournament in Charleston (USA) beating Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in two sets, 7-5, on Wednesday. 7-6 (6).
Badosa, who took down Egypt’s Mayar Sherif in straight sets in the first round yesterday, beat Fernandez in 1 hour and 51 minutes.
The Canadian, 20 and 51 in the world rankings, began to dominate the match, which was played on Charleston’s signature green clay.
Fernandez was placed 3-0 up after breaking the first service game for the Spaniard, 25 and world number 33.
Badosa recovered and put a 3-1 on the scoreboard. Fernandez won the fifth game and went 4-1 which left her two games away from winning the first set.
But the Spaniard responded with a more aggressive game thanks to her improved serve and won six of the next seven matches to take the first set 7-5.
The second set started with Badosa breaking Fernandez’s serve. The Canadian recovered and led 5-4 in the second set.
The serve got Badosa out of trouble again, which forced a tie-break in which the Canadian was awarded a set point, although in the end it was Badosa who won the set and the match.
Now Badosa will face Russia’s Diana Shnaider (95) in the next round, who today beat her compatriot and world number 13, Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.
