Australia revalidate SailGP title and Spain finish ninth

MADRID, May 8. (EUROPEAN PRESS) –

The Australian team, skippered by Tom Slingsby, revalidated the SailGP title after winning the Grand Final in San Francisco (USA), claiming their third consecutive title in the third season of the sailing competition, while the Spain finishes the course ninth and last

After the three fleet regattas on Saturday with the ocean boats already classified, the two races on Sunday will decide between the second and third participants in the Grand Final. The fourth race quickly turned into a duel between France and England and it was Quentin Delapierre’s men who took advantage of a penalty from Sir Ben Ainslie’s boat to win.

Already in the fifth, Australia prevailed over Canadians and Americans. Thus, the British and New Zealand of Peter Burling became finalists, while the French were excluded from the final because their results on Saturday were very conditioned.

In the Grand Final, the Australians got off to a clean start and quickly left behind the British team, who eventually fell in the fight as New Zealand closed in on the ‘Aussies’ in the final maneuver. . However, Tom Slingsby defeated Peter Burling for his third consecutive title.

For its part, the Spanish team formed with Diego Botín, Florian Trittel, Joan Cardona, Joel Rodríguez, María Cantero, Bernardo Freitas (in the fourth race) and Stewart Dodson (in the fifth heat). The ‘Roosters’ had two very good starts in both races on Sunday, but could not keep up with the big favorites and finished eighth in both regattas.

In this way, they end the season ninth and last in the standings. The crew of the F50 Victoria is already focused on the following season, which will begin in Chicago (United States) between June 16 and 17, and will take advantage of these days in San Francisco to continue training.

“There is one month left for Chicago and we are very confident that this team can fight for the top spots, it will take a process, but we have to make an effort to get it there as soon as possible,” commented Botín.
