The governments of Australia, Canada and New Zealand on Sunday highlighted the leadership of US President Joe Biden, who has given up his presidential re-election bid in favour of the country's Vice President, Kamala Harris, who must muster the necessary support ahead of the Democratic National Convention in August. “I have known President Biden for years. He is a great man and everything he does is guided by his love of his country. As president, he is a partner to Canadians and a true friend. To the President and First Lady (Jill Biden): thank you,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau posted on his X social media account. For his part, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese thanked Biden for his leadership and efforts to make the alliance between the two countries “stronger than ever,” which has reinforced their commitment to “democratic values, international security, economic prosperity and climate action for current and future generations.” New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon highlighted Biden's lifelong “public service,” something that “deserves great respect.” “I thank the president for his leadership of the United States and his commitment to New Zealand. And I look forward to working with him for the remainder of his presidency,” he added on his X account. Yoshimasa Hayashi praised Biden's work to strengthen Japan-US relations and assured that he would continue to coordinate with the new US government “regardless of the outcome of the election,” according to Japanese news agency Kyodo News. South Korea's Prime Minister's Office responded similarly, reaffirming its commitment to the alliance with any US government, although it did not comment directly on Biden's resignation, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported.
