Iran’s president on Wednesday insisted on his country’s desire to reach an agreement on its nuclear activities, but questioned whether the United States would stick to a possible agreement in the future.
The United States has already “trampled on” the previous agreement, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said in his address to the UN General Assembly, referring to the US decision to withdraw from the nuclear pact in 2018.
“There is a will, strong and serious, to solve all the problems” in the nuclear negotiations, Raisi said, but added: “Our only wish is that the commitments obtained are kept”.
“Can we really trust without guarantee that they will fulfill their commitments this time? he added in reference to the United States.
After former President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the deal brokered by the Barack Obama administration, Tehran dropped all the limitations the deal placed on its nuclear development.
Changes in US foreign policy that accompany changes in government in Washington have worried not only Iran but also allied countries, who wonder whether the United States will be able to honor the agreements signed on issues such as security. and the fight against climate change.
Even as he expressed his desire to reach an agreement, Raisi criticized what he called a disproportionate scrutiny of Iranian nuclear activities compared to those of other countries, a reference to Israel, which has never confirmed or denied having atomic weapons.
US President Joe Biden, in his speech from the same rostrum, said that “we will not allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons”, but stressed that the United States is ready to resume the agreement if Iran is increasing its commitment.
Raisi, Iran’s former justice chief, denounced the West’s “double standard” on human rights. He accused Israel of creating the biggest prison in the world through its blockade of the Gaza Strip.
He also cited the mass graves of Indigenous people discovered in Canada and the detention of migrants on the southern border of the United States.
His head covered with the traditional turban of Shia clerics, Raisi held a portrait of General Qassem Soleimani, whom he described as a “lover of freedom”. Soleimani, leader of the Revolutionary Guards, was killed in Iraq in an airstrike authorized by Trump in 2020.
