New conquest for Eduardo Santas. The Aragonese cyclist, world champion last Saturday in the time trial, this Monday, he gained weight during the road test, in the C3 category, after reaching the podium as third classified. A bronze medal that the turiasonense captured at the last moment, winning the sprint in an intense and exciting battle with the Colombian Perea, who finished fourth. Ahead of the Spaniard were Graham and Warias, ranked first and second respectively. “It was a dream World Cup, perfect, which compensates for all the work we have done,” explained Santas, after his participation in the World Cup, which took place in the Canadian city of Bay -Comeau, concluded.
Another Aragonese, Juan Alberto Jiménez, also achieved a relevant performance during the test drive, in the C4 category, though he ultimately ran out of reward. After winning three national gold medals this year and a silver at the World Cup in Elzach (Germany), Jiménez arrived at the World Road Championships in Canada exhausted due to a gastrointestinal virus. Despite everything, the Aragonese always remained in the first positions of the race and reached the last meters with options to win. However, Zaragoza were overtaken by their opponents in the final sprint and were relegated to fourth place in the standings – Irishman Ronan Grimesh prevailed.
The Spanish delegation bid farewell to the Baie-Comeau World Cup with nine medals – three gold and six bronze. Eduardo Santas and Sergio Garrote were proclaimed time trial world champions, in their respective categories; while Ricardo Ten won the title this Monday, in road mode, the last day of competition. Likewise, Santas, Garrote and Ten also hung a bronze medal, the same metal that the Spanish relay team obtained, in addition to Gonzalo García Abella twice.
Last Saturday, Santas was proclaimed world champion in the individual time trial category C3, with only eight hundredths of a difference, ahead of the Briton Finlay Graham in the last meters, who finished in second place. The turiasonense had suffered a fall during the last World Cup in Quebec and, in addition, had been on the verge of the podium at the European Championship in Austria. However, he overcame adversity and achieved a tremendous career. The Paralympian from Aragon grew over the kilometers and was also able to beat Bouziani, world champion last year in Cascais, and who had set the best time at intermission.
“2022 World Champion. I never imagined that I would write these words in the title of the publication, but thank God it is no longer a dream, but a reality”, wrote the turiasonense on his social networks . “Work, effort, sacrifice, perseverance, commitment… so many learned values thanks to a whole life dedicated to cycling, a way of life acquired inherited and of which my grandfather will be very proud in the sky”, underlined the Aragonese after winning the individual time trial and dressing like a Rainbow.
