The President of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, took advantage of this Saturday, on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of 1-O, to call for sovereign unity, around his proposal to carry out a concerted referendum with the State and inspired of a “clarity agreement”, the so-called Canadian route.
This is affirmed by an institutional message broadcast on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of October 1, 2017, in which he underlines that “the illusion and the hope of 1-O carry many lessons and learning”.
“We must reunite, rework positively on what unquestionably unites us, on what today still arouses all our pride. We must unite again by the broad consensus that Catalonia must decide freely, collectively and in peace, what must be the political future of the country,” he said.
In his message from the Palau de la Generalitat, Aragonès recalls that a new referendum should ensure that all citizens feel “called to vote”, that the international community “accompanies” the vote and that the State also “recognizes the result”, contrary to what happened in 2017.
For this reason, he put back on the table the “clarity agreement” that he had already mentioned last Tuesday, during the general policy debate in Parliament, a proposal aimed at “determining when and how Catalonia should once again be able exercise the right to decide”.
“We have organized the referendum on 1-O and we will make Catalonia vote again,” said Aragonès, who in his message avoided referring to the crisis in his government, which could lead to a break-up of the coalition. next week.
Five years after the 1-O, Aragonès affirms: “We will do it again, because it is the way to resolve the political conflict with the State”.
“We have to start talking about democracy again. We have to start focusing again on the right to vote, on rights and freedoms,” he added.
