Aragonès calls for unity and guarantees that Catalonia “will vote again”

The President of the Generalitat, Father Aragonestook advantage of this Saturday, on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of 1-O, to call for sovereign unity, around its proposal to carry out a concerted referendum with the State and inspired by a “clarity agreement”, the so-called Canadian route.

This is affirmed by an institutional message broadcast on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of October 1, 2017, in which he underlines that “the illusion and the hope of 1-O carry many lessons and learning”.

“We must reunite, rework positively on what unquestionably unites us, on what today still arouses all our pride. We must unite again by the broad consensus that Catalonia must decide freely, collectively and in peace, what the political future of the country is,” he said.

In his message from the Palau de la Generalitat, Aragonès stresses that a new referendum should ensure that all citizens feel “called to vote”, that the international community “accompanies” the vote and that the State also “recognize the result” difference with what happened in 2017.

For this reason, he again put on the table the “clarity agreement” who already raised last Tuesday, during the general policy debate in Parliament, a proposal to “determine when and how Catalonia should be able to exercise the right to decide again”.

This proposal, however, did not prosper during the vote on the resolutions of the debate, yesterday Friday, because it only garnered the support of the ERC and the municipalities.

“We organized the 1-O referendum and we will make Catalonia vote again”assured Aragonès, who in his message avoided referring to the crisis of his government, which could lead next week to a break-up of the coalition.

Five years after the 1-O, Aragonès declared: “We will do it again, because it is the way to resolve the political conflict with the State”.

“We have to start talking about democracy again. We have to start focusing again on the right to vote, on rights and freedoms,” he added.

In the first part of his post, Aragonès had words of thanks and appreciation to everyone who made 1-O possible.

It was, he said, “a great victory, a great lesson in Democratic values against state repressionand this was possible thanks to a “great alliance between institutions, civil society and citizens”.

He wanted to explicitly mention the role played by those who, in 2017, held the positions of President of the Generalitat, Carles Puigdemont, Vice President, Oriol Junqueras, and President of Parliament, Carme Forcadell.

government crisis

Aragonès’ message comes 24 hours after the end of the deadline that JxCat has given itself to try to redirect the crisis within the Government, before the Junts militia votes in consultation, on October 6 and 7, whether to leave the executive

JxCat sent a document to Aragonès last night with four conditions, including the reinstatement of Jordi Puigneró, whom the president dismissed last Wednesday as vice-president of the government.

Aragonès has previously hinted that the JxCat document is unacceptable and lacks “the will to agree”, so the prospects of a deal in the next few hours are slim.

There’s another JxCat condition that Republican sources say is hard to digest: for the reactivation of a trial staff which is developing a new independence roadmapit is proposed that the Council for the Republic – headed by Puigdemont of Belgium – functions as an umbrella for this space for the unitary direction of independence and exercises “technical coordination”.
