Apple acquired a Canadian artificial intelligence (AI) startup called DarwinAI earlier this year, it has been reported. Bloomberg.
The news becomes relevant given the growing importance of AI in software and the fact that Apple is expected to introduce more generative AI features in iOS 18 later this year.
According to the report, DarwinAI stands out for its AI technology capable of visually inspecting components during manufacturing. The company also specializes in creating smaller and faster AI models, which should benefit the Cupertino-based tech giant.
The report adds that a dozen DarwinAI employees have joined Apple's AI team, including Alexander Wong, an AI researcher who helped develop the startup's technology.
Apple officially acknowledged the acquisition, but did not give specific reasons. He offered a standard response: “Apple occasionally buys smaller tech companies.”
Why did Apple acquire DarwinAI?
Generative AI is currently the buzzword in the tech world. While big names like Microsoft, Google, and Samsung have actively announced the AI capabilities of their products, Apple has not paid close attention.
Apple's only statement came when CEO Tim Cook said the company would innovate generative AI in 2024.
Apple is rumored to be focusing on the on-device AI experience rather than cloud-based features. This makes sense because Apple values user privacy and most functions run on the device itself.
Since DarwinAI is known for its small and fast AI systems, it can help Apple significantly. On-device AI models also eliminate the need for constant internet connectivity to perform AI-based tasks.
