Andreeva continues with firm step in Madrid, Gauff opens with victory

Andreeva, who turns 16 on Saturday, invested 2 hours and 11 minutes to defeat the 13th seed in the Madrid tournament.

The young Russian, who won her first professional victory in the first round against the Canadian Leylah Fernández, continues with a firm step in the Caja Mágica where she becomes the great sensation of the competition.

Haddad Maia, 20th in the world, could not cope with the playful play of Andreeva, who will face the winner of the duel between the Czech Marketa Vondrousova and the Polish Magda Linette in the third round.

The young Russian became one of the main attractions at the Madrid tournament, where Germany’s Jule Niemeier beat Czech Petra Kvitova 7-6 (11/9), 6-1 on Thursday.

Niemeier stunned the tenth seed in 1:52 to advance to the next round, where she will face the winner of the duel between Belgium’s Elise Mertens and Canada’s Rebecca Marino.

Less surprising was the victory of Cori Gauff, sixth seed of the Madrid tournament, against the Spaniard Burillo, from the previous phase.

The American invested 78 minutes to eliminate Burillo 6-4, 6-1 and take a place in the next round, where the winner of the confrontation between the Spaniard Paula Badosa and the Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto will be measured.
