AMLO will host Canadian companies in the energy and mining sector

The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, promised to receive Canadian companies in the energy and mining sector that may have “outstanding problems” with the Mexican government to develop their business in the country.

“I made a commitment to Prime Minister Trudeau to receive companies that may have outstanding issues, some disagreement with the attitude of our government. We are always open to dialogue,” said the Mexican President during the bilateral Mexico-Canada meeting held within the framework of the Tenth Summit of North American Leaders.

Statements by the Mexican President came after the request the day before by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who called on the Mexican government to open up investment in strategic minerals to the private sector, during a private meeting he had with members of North American companies organized by the Business Coordinating Council (CCE), the US Chamber of Commerce and the Business Council of Canada.

During a meeting with the private sector, Trudeau assured that Canada is a reliable partner, and proposed the operation of mining companies in this country to make the most of critical minerals that lead to the development of electric cars, such as lithium, and generate jobs for citizens.

“The electric cars that citizens want to drive use essential minerals, and Canada released the essential materials to see the opportunities we had and be a leader in moving to a clean energy economy,” he said. he said at the meeting.

Besides, in 2021, the president of Mexico opened a front in which he demanded that Canadian miners First Majestic Silver Corp and Americas Gold and Silver that they pay the taxes that correspond to them in the country, as well as to respect the trade union rights of the workers.

However, at Wednesday’s meeting, The Mexican President assured that The economic issues related to investments by Canadian companies have already been discussed, This includes major mining and energy companies such as TransCanada, which is investing in the construction of a gas pipeline in the Gulf of Mexico.

“We seek to resolve the problems, the differences, that logically arise with regard to these economic and trade relations, and also in times of boom, because Canadian investments in Mexico are increasing a lot, like never before,” concluded López Obrador.
