AMLO regrets Canada's unilateral immigration measures – El Sol de México

Before information that Canada will reimpose visa requirements for Mexicans who seek to visit this country in order to put an end to the increase in the number of flow of asylum seekers, the presidential spokesperson, Jesus Ramirez broadcast a video on their social networks in which President Andrés Manuel López Obrador regretted that the government of Justin Trudeau impose unilateral measures in matters of immigration.

In the video, the president reveals that negotiations are underway with Ottawa for Mexico to control immigration flows from Canada. “And now Canada is in the same situation, they want to take action against Mexico; We are really sorry. “There are negotiations to reach an agreement, so that we can control immigration flows from Canada, as we have always done.”

“And we acted with them generously, with the government of Prime Minister Trudeau, but they were already on the verge of applying unilateral measures, precisely now, which are the elections in Mexico. It's the same with steel now, what a coincidence,” Lopez Obrador said.

The president also said he would not attend the next North American Leaders Summit, which will take place in Canada, if you feel that Canada and the United States are not treating your country fairly. “If there is no respectful treatment, I will not go,” he warned.

In the afternoon, Canadian media reported that tomorrow, Thursday, the Trudeau government would announce the reinstatement of visas for Mexicans, a requirement it removed in 2016.

The measure will not, however, affect all Mexicans, since, according to information from CBCnews and Radio-Canada, Mexicans who have already traveled to this country in the last ten years, students and temporary agricultural workers would be exempt from this requirement, but they will have to obtain an electronic travel authorization (ETA), as has been the case since the end of 2016.

Ottawa will also cancel all ETAs issued by the Immigration Department for Mexicans who are not on Canadian soil when the new rules come into effect. These people will need to apply for a visa.
