AMLO highlighted the growth of Canadian investment in Mexico: “The agreements have been beneficial for both countries”

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) announced the results of the meeting he had with the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeauafter meeting him at the X Summit of North American Leaders.

Through his official Twitter account, the Mexican president indicated that after concluding the meeting between Mexico and Canada, it can be noted that various agreements have been concluded in terms of economy, trade, migration and support for indigenous communities.

Besides, described these agreements as “beneficial” for both countries; However, he pointed out that the investment, in different aspects, of Canada in Mexico in the last four years “has increased like never before”, for which he held the meeting held at the National Palace.

Remember that over the past four years Canada’s investment in Mexico has grown like never before“, were the remarks that he accompanied last Wednesday, January 11.

In a second message, the Mexican president thanked the Prime Minister and his wife, Sophie Grégoire, for “your sincere friendship” not only with him and his wife, the academic Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller, but with all the Mexican people.

In the middle of the meeting of North American leaders, it emerged that Mexico and Canada succeeded in winning a dispute in the United States over rules of origin for automobiles under the current Free Trade Agreement between North American nations (USMCA).

The court ruling came a year after the countries filed a lawsuit against the United States with regarding how the content requirements should be applied in the automotive sector since the entry into force of the T-MEC on July 1, 2020.

According to T-MEC, the 75% of competent an automobile must be produced in the North American region for the product to qualify for a tax rebate; however, the United States maintained its differences when calculating the percentage.

According to controversy United States – Automotive rules of origin (USA-MEX-2022-31-01), the requirements established by the United States to calculate the “Regional value content (VCR) of passenger vehicles, light trucks and their parts, did not correspond to what is established in the T-MEC”.
