AMLO asks the United States and Canada to leave the interventionist policy

MEXICO CITY.- The President of the Republic, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, called on his counterparts in Latin America to convince the United States and Canada and to try to convince them to withdraw their “politics of hegemony” and “to want intervene in the affairs of other countries.

López Obrador’s statements were made in the main theme of a seminar organized by the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF), entitled “The America Latin America and the Caribbean, the future of integration”.

“We have to convince the leaders of Canada and the United States, they have to change the policy that has been imposed of predominance, of hegemony, of wanting to intervene in the internal affairs of other nations,” he explained.

“This outdated policy needs to change now, the interventions, the coups, the fact that the sovereignty of countries is respected and thinking that we need each other and that we can strengthen each other a lot as a region of the world” , did he declare. .

These statements by López Obrador were made as part of the consultations on his disputed energy policy that the United States and Canada have requested under the trade agreement between the three countries, the T-MEC.

Last July, the United States and Canada asked to begin consultations in the T-MEC on Mexico’s controversial energy policy, which López Obrador changed to favor state companies, Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) and the Federal Commission for Electrical Energy (CFE).

The United States and Canada have expressed concerns about private investment in Mexico’s energy, which was opened up to individuals after the 2013 energy reform.

This is the fourth time that the general dispute resolution mechanism of Chapter 31 of the T-MEC, in force since July 2020, has been used, according to the Mexican Ministry of Economy.

The president explained that this is a normal procedure, lasting just over 70 days and, if there is no agreement, international panels begin.
