Alonso, with ‘one eye on the radar’ for Canada: ‘Last year I finished second and this weekend it may rain’

In Barcelona, things didn’t go so well for the British brand. Just as we expected to see a good performance from green cars, the reality is that the end result did not live up to expectations. During qualifying, Alonso made an error that damaged the flat bottom and therefore on Sunday he had to start from eighth position on the grid. However, Aston Martins’ pace in the race was not enough to challenge for another podium – they finished sixth and seventh.

Now comes the turn of the Canadian GP which, with Lawrence Stroll at the helm of the project, could be considered the second “home” Grand Prix for Aston Martin. Moreover, it seems to be beneficial for them. On the one hand, the characteristics of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve work in favor of the AMR23, and on the other, Montreal is the place where we will finally see the first major update that has been talked about so much in recent weeks. .

Fernando Alonso pointed out that this weekend there could be more than one surprise, either due to the weather or the particularities of the track. He also claims they will be ready for anything and stresses that the objective is simply to score a good number of points for their fight with Mercedes in the Constructors’ Championship.

“We had two busy weekends with Monaco and Spain, and we came away with 32 of both. The atmosphere in Barcelona was fantastic, but Saturday was tough and Sunday we didn’t have the pace to make a good show,” said the two-time champion.

“The next stop is Montreal, which is a historic Formula 1 circuit that brings back fond memories. Last year, for example, I started second on the grid after a chaotic and wet qualifying session. It could still rain this weekend, so we’ll keep an eye on the radar.“.

“The circuit is fun and while overtaking can be tough, it can also lead to some amazing racing, so we’ll be ready for anything. We have some improvements for this weekend. Our goal is to have a calm Grand Prix and to score as many points as possible.”

Following the departure of Nicholas Latifi from the ‘Great Circus’ at the end of 2022, Lance Stroll is now the only Canadian on the grid. The Montreal-born man is also eager to return to his ‘home’ event and admitted they will attack hard as the margins between the teams are quite tight.

“I’m very excited to come back to Montreal, it’s always special for me to see all the Canadian support in the city where I grew up,” commented the local driver.

“With the closeness of the pecking order in recent races, it will be interesting to see what the characteristics of the circuit do with the competitiveness between the teams this weekend. The margins will be very tight, so we will push a lot,” he added to conclude.
