Alonso is penalized 30 seconds and leaves the points, according to Alpine

The Spaniard Fernando Alonso (alpine) was penalized 30 seconds for running without a mirror during the United States Grand Prix Formula 1 this Sunday, a decision that angered his team, which protested against “the admissibility” of the complaint filed by the Haas team.

With the sanction, Alonso falls from the points he obtained with enormous effortafter starting fourteenth, victim of an accident due to contact with the Canadian Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) and finishing seventh.

Alonso had taken Stroll’s suction and, when it happened to him, who will be his teammate next year made a late move that led the Asturian’s car to do a wheelie that miraculously ended in a scare and that didn’t stop him from finishing the race.

The FIA said Alonso returned to the track ‘in dangerous conditions after the accident’for which he accepted a penalty that takes him from seventh to fifteenth place.

For the Alpine team “this post-race time penalty is disappointing”, which “unfortunately means that Fernando stays out of points-entitled positions”.

“The team acted fairly and considered the car still structurally safe following Fernando’s incident with Lance Stroll on lap 22 of the race, with the right rear-view mirror detached from the chassis as a result of crash damage,” the team added in a statement.

Alpine recalls that the FIA ”has the right to mark a car black and orange during the race if it deems it dangerous” but that on this occasion “he evaluated the car and decided not to act”.

Also, after the race, the FIA technical delegate considered the car to be legal”Alpine underlined.

“The team also believes that, because the protest was filed 24 minutes after the deadline, it should not have been accepted and, therefore, the sanction must be considered invalid. Following this point, the team protested the admissibility of Haas F1 Team’s original protest,” the team said.
