Aikins and Noble set Pan American records on another dominant day for U.S. swimming

Jack Aikins and Kennedy Noble set Pan American records Sunday in the 200-meter backstroke to lead another crushing U.S. swimming performance at the Pan American Games in Santiago.

Canadian butterfly star Maggie Mac Neil added the Pan American title to her Olympic crown in the 100 meters.

It was another American recital at the National Stadium Park Aquatic Center, with its swimmers winning four gold medals for the second straight day in the continental event.

Noble won her gold medal by stopping the clocks with a time of 2:08.03 and surpassing the mark that Canadian Hilary Caldwell set at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games by 19 hundredths. Her compatriot Reilly Tiltmann took silver and the bronze went to the Brazilian Alexia Tavares.

In the same distance for men, Aikins won gold in 1:56.58 and beat the mark held by his compatriot Sean Lehane, who clocked 57 hundredths in Toronto. American Ian Grum and Canadian Hugh McNeill won silver and bronze respectively.

With the four gold medals obtained this Sunday, the United States accumulates eight of this color in the swimming medal table at Santiago 2023. They overtake Canada, which has four gold medals, and Brazil, third with three.

The other gold medals won by the Americans that day came in the men’s 200-meter freestyle, where Coby Carroza won with a time of 1:37.47. Silver was won by Mexican Jorge Iga with a time of 1:47.56 and the bronze medal went to Brazilian Murilo Setin.

Another American on the top step of the podium was Lukas Miller, who won gold in the men’s 100-meter butterfly with a time of 51.98. His compatriot Arsenio Bustos won the bronze medal and silver went to Brazilian Vinicius Lanza.

Neil added Pan American gold to the Olympic title in the 100 fly. Mac Neil saved his strength for the final and set a Games record with a time of 56.94. American Kelly Pash won silver and her compatriot Olivia Bray took bronze.

It was Mac Neil’s second gold medal of the weekend after being the spark plug from the third post that allowed the Canadians to emerge triumphant in the 4x100m relay.

Mac Neil won three medals at the Tokyo Olympics two years ago: gold in the butterfly, as well as silver and bronze in the relay.

Canada also reached the podium when Mary-Sophie Harvey clocked 1:58.08 to win the 200 freestyle. Brazilian María Da Silva won silver. Bronze went to American Camille Spink.

The only gold medal that did not stay in the hands of the United States or Canada was the mixed 4×100 relay, where Brazil won with a time of 3:23.78. The Americans won silver and the Canadians took bronze.
