A silver medal at the Pan American badminton for Uriel Canjura

The Salvadoran fell in the final against the favorite of the event of the XXVI YONEX Pan Am Individual Championships 2023, the Canadian Brian Yang

Salvadoran Uriel Canjura won a meritorious silver medal at the XXVI YONEX Pan American Individual Championships 2023, in Kingston, Jamaica, after losing to Canadian Brian Yang 21-10, 21-5.

The American, world number 29 and seeded number one in the event, did not drop a set in the competition and was crowned undefeated champion after beating the Salvadoran in the final.

In the gold medal duel, the longest streak the Salvadoran was able to add was four, compared to the 14 straight points his rival had.

Canjura’s path to a silver medal began in the second round after advancing via bye on the first stay. There he beat Mexican Luis Armando Montoya 16-21, 21-7 and 21-18; this victory earned him access to the round of 16.

In his second duel of the event, Canjura defeated Brazilian Deivid Silva, with partial scores 21-19 and 21-17. After the victory against carioca, the national faced Jonathan Matias of Brazil, beating them 2-1 (18-21, 21-13 and 21-18) and reaching the semi-final.

His rival in this case was Guatemalan Kevin Cordón, seeded number two at the 2023 Pan American Individual Championships and number 44 in the world rankings. Canjura battled to defeat the chapín in three sets, with partials 20-22, 21-12 and 21-14.

Another achievement for Canjura in this tournament was to qualify for the World Championship for the first time in the history of Salvadoran badminton, which will take place from August 21-27 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
