A Montreal filmmaker changes the representation of Mexicans in Canada

After her big success at TIFF 2018 with the film “Roads in February”, Canadian director Katherine Jerkovic presented her latest film at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022.

The film “Coyote” follows the same path as “Roads in Frebruary” in terms of cinematic style through the pace at which it tells the story, as well as its characteristic intimate and insightful approach to the characters.

In the edition of the Festival Internacional de Cine de Toronto, the filmmaker of Latin American races, compared that one of the objects of the film is to represent to the Mexicans that live in Canada from a manera distinguished from the manera that traditionally turns them into the pantalla big.

From his point of view, the stories of Mexicans focused on issues related to immigration, leaving aside his strong character and always ready to move forward, regardless of adversity.

He added that from his own experience, the Mexicans he meets in Montreal do not resemble the stereotypes shown in many films.

What is “Coyote” about?

The film tells us the story of Camilo, a Mexican in his fifties, reserved and reticent. This man works for a cleaning company in Montreal, but years ago he owned a successful restaurant called Le Coyote which, for unknown reasons, went bankrupt.

Camilo has been trying to get back into the food business with little success, but an opportunity knocks on his doorstep when an old friend offers him a job as a chef on the outskirts of town. From there, the plot will show us the protagonist’s journey to try to regain the successful life he led in the past, with some family obstacles in between.

Coyote is a moving film about a man who seeks the best for himself and for the reconciliation of his family. According to TIFF, the director makes this film one of the most moving and emotionally authentic stories of the year. Have you seen him?
