The Metropolitan University of Toronto will present its last event of the 2023 semester, belonging to the International Issues Discussion (IID) series: Mexico: rights, crimes, abuses, politics and the United States.
During the event, Luis Horace Najeraa well-known journalist and crime analyst from Mexico who has lived in exile in Canada since 2008, will appear to discuss the subject.
Nájera was a reporter for Grupo Reforma in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, where he covered organized crime on both sides of the US-Mexico border.
Yet more than 14 years ago, he and his family arrived in Canada seeking asylum after fleeing Mexico after multiple assaults, threats, and after learning that his name was on a list of journalists sentenced to death for organized crime.
Nájera was a writer-in-residence for PEN Canada-George Brown in Toronto and the recipient of the 2010 CJFE International Press Freedom Award and one of the 2011 Human Rights Watch Hellman/Hammett Awards.
