The game between the Selecta and the United States had unexpected repercussions, when the German-Canadian journalist, Manuel Vethwho also works for Transfermarkt, made disparaging remarks towards the Salvadoran side who faced the Americans in the final meeting of the Concacaf Nations League group stage.

In a tweet addressed to the @ManagerTactical account, he wrote around 8:00 p.m. this Tuesday, after Canada’s 4-1 victory against Honduras, with which he ended up leading his group, avoiding the United States in the semi-finals of the Nations League Final Four.

“Canada crushes Honduras and takes the harder road avoiding the United States who could barely beat a handful of farmers from El Salvador. Too bad…”, ironically referring to the fact that he will not feature against the Americans until a possible Nations League final in June. The US account said Canada was scared of the ‘Stars and Stripes’ team.

The disapproving comments for the derogatory nature of his remarks were not long in coming and the technical assistant of the Chicago Fire and the Selecta, Gerson Pérez, took it upon himself to reply that the sentence was said in a derogatory manner. After a few hours, the communicator deleted the tweet and argued that it was a misinterpretation that happened with his message.

The Tweet Deleted By Manuel Veth That Treated Selecta Players Like Farmers

“I deleted the tweet calling El Salvador a group of farmers. It was definitely disrespectful to a large group of people and a talented group of professional athletes. Thanks to Andrew Visnovsky and Mike Gray for giving me an education quick here. A group of farmers definitely means something very different in the European/Canadian context,” the communicator explained in apology on Wednesday.
