The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, he said that will welcome Canadian companies who have complained about certain policies of his administration, especially electricity and miningafter the meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Companies of Canada denounced the changes in the rules of the game of the government since López Obrador presided over it and Ottawa started in July with Washington consultations on the energy policy of your administrationunder the TMEC North American Trade Agreement.
“I made a commitment to Prime Minister Trudeau to welcome companies that may have outstanding issues, some disagreements with the attitude of our government; we are always open to dialogue,” the Mexican president said at the start of their bilateral meeting.
Three days before traveling to the Latin American country, where he took part in a summit of North American leaders on Tuesday, which was also attended by American Joe Biden, the Canadian Prime Minister told Reuters on Friday that I expected progress in the energy dispute at the trilateral meeting.
Since coming to power in 2018, López Obrador has promoted legal changes to in favor of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE)which gives it a preponderance over foreign and renewable energy companies, some of which are Canadian.
“We talked about the companies that operate in the electricity sector, we also seek to resolve problems, differences that logically arise with regard to these economic, commercial relations,” the president added on Wednesday.
In the mining sector, the Canadian First Majestic reported in 2021 that it had sought international arbitration against Mexico over a protracted tax dispute, in which local authorities were seeking to make it pay some $500 million for an alleged tax debt.
In addition, López Obrador also said he spoke with Trudeau about an investment already announced by the Canadian company TC Energy to build a gas pipeline that will supply gas to the southeast of the country.
