Johnny Powers is dead

The wrestler Johnny Powers died on December 30 Last year. This was confirmed by Canadian wrestling historian Greg Oliver. Powers was 79 and died at his home in Smithville, Ontario.

Powers, real name Dennis Waters, began training at age 15 before becoming a professional wrestler at age 20, making his debut in 1960. His career spanned Canada and the northeastern United States , where He came to face Bruno Sammartino several times for the WWWF Heavyweight Championship. He was one of the co-founders of the National Wrestling Federation promotion, where he won the heavyweight championship twice.

He also became the star of Championship Wrestling with Johnny Powers TV show, including his name in the title of the show. After touring Japan several times and forming a friendship with Antonio Inoki, Powers sold NWF in 1973. In NJPW, he won the NWA North American Tag Team Championship with Patt Patterson. His retirement took place in 1982. In 1990, he was inducted into the Greatest 18 Club, the NJPW Hall of Fame.
