The President of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, received Joe Biden at Felipe Ángeles International Airport in the country’s capital to participate in the North American Leaders Summit. The last visit by a President of the United States to Mexico was in 2013, when the then President Barack Obama met his former counterpart Enrique Peña Nieto.
The Mexican authorities deployed an important security operation, in which the presence of members of the army and the National Guard stood out. Moreover, there was aerial surveillance by helicopters and drones, as reported by the Reforma news agency.
On this occasion, Biden’s visit to the North American country is due at the X Summit of North American Leaders, which will be attended next Tuesday by the leaders of the United States, Mexico and Canada. For this reason, López Obrador will also receive the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeu.
The Mexican Minister of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrardreported that the trilateral meeting ofaddress issues of migration, development, security, climate change and health, among others, as reported by the newspaper El Universal.
However, Ebrard explained that the intention of the Mexican administration is to mark a new stage for the region that can be extended to the rest of the continent based on reciprocity, mutual respect and a common vision.
