Turkey threatens Greece with ‘serious consequences’
Turkey warned on Wednesday that there will be “Serious consequences” for Greece if it extends its territorial waters to 12 nautical miles (about 22 kilometers) around the island of Crete.
Government spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said “Turkey will not accept any kind of such extension, even if it is only one mile”reason why he indicated that if Athens takes this decision, “there will be a strong response”.
His remarks are in line with statements made in recent days by the Turkish foreign and defense ministers, who accused Greece of undermining any dialogue to find a solution to the disputes that the two countries have in the Mediterranean Oriental.
This week, Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar pointed out that it is the Greek authorities who are “deliberately causing an increase in tension to divert the attention of public opinion from the problems that the country is going through internally”as collected by the Anatolia News Agency.
However, Kalin did not assess whether such an expansion of territorial waters could eventually lead to a military intervention by Turkey or an open war between the two countries, whose the relationship soured again.
