MEXICO CITY (apro).– The United States Embassy in Mexico and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce (CanCham) have asked the Mexican government to address consultations on the country’s energy policy, promoted under the T- MEC, “with determination and seriousness.
This, because last Wednesday, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, during his morning conference, reacted to the notification of the consultations sent by the United States Department of Commerce (USTR, for its acronym in English) with the song “Oops, what a fear!”, by the late singer Chico Che.
US Ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar called for a determined approach to the dispute over energy issues.
“The consultation mechanism is a fundamental part of the USMCA that benefits all three countries by allowing us to quickly resolve disputes. We must approach this energy dispute with determination and seriousness for a speedy resolution.”
The vice-president of the energy committee of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Mexico (Canchem), Carlos de María y Campos, considered that “Mexico must seriously attend the consultations requested by the countries” within the T-MEC .
He added that the consequences of reaching a panel can be very serious due to “the impact it can have on the economy; It’s no laughing matter.”
He explained that Canada’s investigations coincide with those of the United States, concerning the predominance given to Pemex and the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), as well as the refusal, omission or delay of procedures allowing companies to buy or produce energy.
The day before, Foreign Relations Secretary Marcelo Ebrard indicated that the team that will defend Mexico in the T-MEC consultation process is already being prepared.
In a video, he said he was entering a meeting to prepare the team that, together with Economy, will be in charge of supporting the consultation process.
“We are entering the meeting to prepare the team that, together with the Economy, will be in charge of taking care of the consultation process that the United States and Canada have requested regarding Mexico’s energy policy. We will prepare and defend our arguments,” he explained.
Later, during a press conference, the CFE maintained its position that the agreement is not violated and this position will be defended during the mechanism.
“The position of the Attorney General and that of the CFE are exactly what the President said today, the treaty is not violated and that is what will be demonstrated” during the consultation, said the spokesperson Louis Bravo.
In an interview with Milenio, Economy Secretary Tatiana Clouthier emphasized that unity “is the space where dialogue will take place to find solutions.
“We are going to see what is hurting them (the United States and Canada) and look at those issues. It seems like we want to see the end and we want to see a tragedy when we haven’t sat down to talk yet,” he said.
He explained that there is a specific term for this and that they will explore the 75 days to see if we can find solutions and not buy “the box of the dead right now to bury it when the throat of the man hardly hurts,” Clouthier said.
