The deadline given by Europe to restore electricity to the Cañada Real in Madrid is not respected

The NGO Save the Children denounces this Friday that Spain “neglects” the end of the European Committee of Social Rights which called for “immediate action” to be taken, before December 15to guarantee the the electricity supply of the Cañada Real de Madridwhich is heading towards a third winter without light.

This mandate expired on Thursday and “there is no trace” of no official government responsewhich “perpetuates” the at-risk situation of the 1,800 children concernedwho are at the gates of another winter of low temperatures without heatingin what represents “a danger to the physical and mental health, academic performance and well-being of children”.

save the children insists in a note on the fact that cutting off electricity presupposes a “violation of the rights” of health, protection against poverty and social exclusion or the right to housing.

Notice for Spain

The director of Social and Political Incidence of Save the Children, Catherine PerazzoHe further argues that when Spain accepted in 2021 the collective complaints procedure of the European Committee of Social Rights “has accepted it with all the obligations that this implies”.

This is why, he continues, Europe’s request should have been accepted “with all its consequences and all its phases”, and calls “unacceptable” that the request to take “immediate action” to restore service was ignored.

“It is not necessary to go into the legal issues that affect the supply company or the contractual relations with it, but a political will”

Perazzo stresses that it is “particularly necessary to respect these measures” given the situation of “particular vulnerability” experienced by affected children for this power outage, as well as the “irreversible effect” that the passage of time has on children’s rights.

And he adds that, to comply with these measures, “It is not necessary to go into the legal issues” that affect the supply company or the contractual relations with it, but “a political will”.

In this sense, it abounds that it would be enough to provide the affected families with sources of energy such as generators or solar panels.
