MADRID, 11 Dec. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Spanish adaptive surfing team once again shone at the World Championships held in Pismo Beach, California, where they won a total of five medals: one gold, one silver, one bronze and two copper.
The great protagonist was María Martín-Granizo, who was proclaimed world champion of the new Stand3 category ahead of her compatriot Mireia Cabañes, although the two were the only participants. The winner clearly dominated the qualifying round, but in the final it was much more even and they won with less than a point difference.
For her part, the bronze medal went to Sarah Almagro from Malaga in the Prone2 category. The Andalusian entered the final with the second best score, but in the fight for the podium she was overtaken by Australians Emma Dieters and Jocelyn Neumueller.
In addition, Spain won two more copper medals, awarded for fourth place thanks to Audrey Pascual and Ibon Oregui. The 18-year-old from Madrid, who entered this event after nearly landing after competing in a European Cup Alpine Skiing event, was battling for silver. After entering the final with the third highest score, she ultimately fell to Canadian Victoria Feige, Chilean Noemí Álvarez and Frenchwoman Emmanuelle Blanchet.
For his part, Oregi entered the fight for the podium with the third best score of the finalists, but he could only grab bronze by half a point, the difference which separated him from Chile’s Altair Olivares. Welshman Llywyn Willians was crowned world champion ahead of Australian Mark Mono Stewart.
Thus, in the overall results obtained by all its athletes in this world championship, Spain finished in third position (10,448) in the general classification by country after the United States (10,890 points) and France (10,695 ).
