Canada concerned about Mexico’s biotech plans | Mexico News

CANADA.- After the presentation of multiple energy and mining projects by the Mexican government, the Canadian government expressed concern about Mexico’s approach biotechnology regulations and approvals.

marie ngCanada’s Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development, expressed this disagreement during a virtual meeting with Raquel BuenrostroSecretary of Economy of Mexico.

Through a tweet, Buenrostro said that “they held a meeting where they agreed to maintain the work tables related to the energy problem and stressed the importance of making progress in the trade issues that benefit both countries“.



Biotechnology in contrast to global food security

While, through a statement, the Canadian official explained that “there are concerns about the consultations that Canada has initiated within the framework of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC) regarding certain energy sector regulatory reforms”.

The Canadian minister mentioned that the regulation of biotech products is concernedparticularly in a context of concern for global food security and the importance of science-based regulatory processes.

Minister Ng reiterated Canada’s continuing concerns about the investment climate in Mexico, particularly in the energy and mining sectors, the statement said.

This meeting took place the day after the meeting between Buenrostro and the United States Trade Representative, Katherine Taiwhere the US official spoke of “the importance of acting quickly to deal with the problems in the energy sector of Mexico that the United States identified in its request for consultations of 20 July 2022 under the T-MEC”.
