Quebec MPs refuse to take the oath to King Charles III

Recently, a group of members from Quebec located on the St. Lawrence River in the Canadian province of Quebecwho had also positioned themselves in the last provincial elections, refused on Wednesday to take the oath of allegiance to King Carlos III, head of state of Canada, as required by the Constitution itself.

In total, eleven members of the left-wing party Québec solidaire were sworn in during a speech broadcast on television. “towards the Quebec people”, but they did not want to take the oath which binds them to the British crown, at the risk of not being able to sit in the National Assembly of Quebec at the end of November.

The spokesman for his party, Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois, assured at a press conference that they had acted “in full knowledge of the facts” and that in the same way “they campaigned to change the era in Quebec, and if they sent us to Parliament It’s to open a door,” the man added of what happened.

In this sense, according to the constitutional law of Canada, it is established that any member elected at the federal or provincial level must take an oath of allegiance to the British monarchy in order to be able to exercise it, therefore swearing allegiance to the British crown has always been a cause of conflict in Quebec, a predominantly French-speaking province, which held two referendums, in 1980 and 1995, to secede from the rest of Canada. In both cases, the majority voted no to independence.

Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, recognized leader of the party, indicated last week that it was “a conflict of interest” since thus “one cannot serve two masters”. Moreover, according to him, the monarchy costs “67 million Canadian dollars every year”, a significantly high figure, added to the fact that this oath is a “reminder to colonial domination”, which they oppose.

For his part, the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, reaffirmed on Wednesday that “there was not a Quebecer” who wanted to “reopen the Constitution” and that in fact, abolishing the monarchy precisely requires a rewriting of the Constitution, with the unanimous approval of Parliament and simultaneously of ten Canadian provincial governments, which can take years.
