The double serves the return against Italy and the final against Australia

The Canadian Davis Cup team reached the second final in its tennis World Cup history this Saturday in the last three editions, beating Italy (2-1) in the second semi-final of the Final 8 which is played at Martín Carpena in Malaga.

Vasek Pospisil and Felix Auger-Aliassime beat Matteo Berrettini and Fabio Fognini (7-6(2), 7-5) on the third and final point. The dream of the first ‘Salad Bowl’ still lives on in Team North America, despite the fact that the day started with Denis Shapovalov losing in an epic point by Lorenzo Sonego.

Italy, champions in 1976, were left with options after the crazy 7-6(4), 6-7(5), 6-4 in which Shapovalov found himself overwhelmed with pressure, very badly remains within the break options’ (1/13) and with his serve at the most decisive moment. However, Felix Auger-Aliassime held Team Canada back with a resounding 6-3, 6-4 loss to Lorenzo Musetti.

Toni Nadal’s pupil entered doubles, while Italy opted for Matteo Berrettini as Fognini’s partner. The first set took on Italian color after a ‘break’ in game three but, with plenty of fabric to cut, the Canadian pair held on and forced a sudden death in which they totally dominated.

The North American comeback picked up plenty of points despite Berrettini and Fognini once again hitting first. Pospisil and Auger-Aliassime immediately reacted to the “break” and added one more in the eleventh game, already decisive to go to the final.
