Ottawa. Canada’s spy agency said Friday it was investigating credible death threats against people in Canada from Iran, days after Britain leveled similar charges against the Islamic regime.
The Canadian Intelligence Service (CSIS, for its acronym in English) “is actively investigating several death threats from the Islamic Republic of Iran on the basis of credible information”, declared to AFP Eric Balsam, spokesman. word of CSIS.
“Ultimately, these hostile activities and foreign interference undermine the security of Canada and Canadians, as well as our democratic values and our sovereignty,” he added.
No details of the investigation were released, but Balsam said the agency was working with international partners.
CSIS is also aware that Iran monitors and intimidates people in Canada, including members of the Iranian diaspora, in order to “silence those who speak out publicly against” the regime, he added.
Last week, the British government accused Tehran of threatening the lives of UK-based journalists.
“Today I summoned the Iranian Chargé d’Affaires after journalists working in the UK received immediate death threats from Iran,” the British Foreign Secretary tweeted at the time. James Cleverly.
