López Obrador to hold talks with Biden amid energy controversy

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that he would meet this Tuesday with his American counterpart, Joe Biden, in the midst of the controversy over Mexico’s energy policy within the framework of the treaty between Mexico, the United States and the Canada (T-MEC).

“Relations with the United States government are very good and we don’t want a trial and that’s how yesterday (Foreign Secretary) Marcelo Ebrard told me that they were looking for him from the White House because President Biden wants to talk to me today on the phone,” he said during his morning press conference.

His statements come after the US Ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, said on Monday that Washington was maintaining the energy consultations it began with Canada last July with the argument that López Obrador’s policy favors state-owned companies to the detriment strangers.

The Mexican president said last week that the White House was giving up on further consultations and moving to a controversial panel within the T-MEC.

Questioned by the contradiction of versions, López Obrador now insists that relations are good, as shown by the call he will have with Biden.

“If the relationship was bad, then these meetings, these conversations would not be wanted. The relationship is good, very good, and President Biden has said it many times before, and we thank him, that our relationship is on equal footing,” he said.

But he added that Mexico’s energy sovereignty is something that “is not subject to any negotiation, any treaty, it’s a matter of principles.”

“I am sure they will realize that our relationship with the application of our sovereign policy in electricity matters, in oil matters, in the management of lithium is in no way affected,” he said.

The Mexican leader said he was unaware of the issues that will be discussed with Biden, but tentatively suggested they could be linked to the consultations and North American Leaders’ Summit taking place in Mexico in November.

“I think maybe it’s because we’re going to have a summit, Prime Minister (Justin) Trudeau (of Canada) and President Biden will be with us, and maybe it’s for this topic,” a- he declared.
