Mexico’s president appoints new economy minister after former incumbent resigns

The new head of the economic cabinet holds a degree in mathematics from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and a postgraduate degree in economics from the College of Mexico (Colmex), the president pointed out.

On Thursday, López Obrador announced that Clouthier had made the decision to leave the Economics portfolio amid the dispute between Mexico and the United States and Canada over its energy policy. “We respect your decision,” said the head of the Federal Executive in the company of the resignation.

One of Clouthier’s main tasks in recent months has been leading negotiations with the US and Canadian governments on investments in the energy sector.

According to companies in these countries, tens of billions of dollars invested are at risk due to changes to legislation under the current López Obrador administration, which favors Mexican state oil companies in the sector, the agency reported. Sputnik press release.

The president tried to prevent the resignation of Clouthier, author of the book Together We Made History, a chronicle of the presidential campaign of López Obrador which she led in 2018. “We insisted that she stay, but it is a woman with convictions, with criteria (…), she will continue to defend justice and promote the economic and political development of the country”, declared the Head of State.

Clouthier read a letter with the president at the National Palace, the seat of the executive, in which he declared: “I leave with an outstretched hand, the door of my house always open and my heart always receptive to you and to Beatriz (Gutiérrez Müller )”, wife of Lopez Obrador.
