Russian energy giant Gazprom has cut gas supplies from the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, worsening energy shortages across Europe, which relies heavily on Russian fossil fuels. A spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday Western sanctions had made it impossible for Russian engineers to perform maintenance on components of the pipeline, including a turbine critical to its operation.

Dmitry Peskov: “Supply problems [de gas] they were born as a result of the sanctions that Western countries, including Germany and the United Kingdom, imposed on our country and various companies. There are no other reasons that could lead to supply issues.

Gas prices jumped more than 30% across Europe following the announcement of the indefinite closure of the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline, while the euro plunged below the value of the dollar for the first time in nearly two decades. The German government has taken steps to delay the planned closure of two aging nuclear power plants, justifying such action by the need to preserve energy supplies. Meanwhile, the Swedish Prime Minister warns that a “winter of war” is looming due to the cut in Russian gas supplies.
