The leaders of France, Germany, the United Kingdom and other countries confirmed their support for Ukraine and pledged to maintain pressure on Russia.
The leaders of France, Germany, the United Kingdom and other countries on Tuesday warned Russia against any annexation of Ukrainian territory, and again expressed their support for Kyiv, which is invaded by forces from Moscow for six months.
The leaders took part in a video meeting, as part of the “Crimea platform”, a format which brings together the main states that support Ukraine and which was created by Kyiv before the start of the war on February 24 .
French President Emmanuel Macron called for “no weakness, no spirit of compromise” against Russia, and asked Moscow for a “cessation of hostilities”, to “withdraw its troops from all Ukrainian territory” and to “choose diplomacy to rebuild peace”.
We condemn Russia. We will never recognize any attempt to change the status of any part of Ukraine,” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said.
Confronted with the idea of pro-Russian officials in occupied territories calling for a referendum on joining Russia, such as in Crimea in 2014, Scholz said that “any sham referendum or other attempt to change the status of certain parts of Ukraine will not be recognized.”
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said Russian President Vladimir Putin “wants to do to all of Ukraine what he did to Crimea”, a peninsula annexed by Moscow eight years ago after a referendum not recognized by the EU. Ukraine nor by Westerners.
We cannot allow borders to be changed by force of arms. We will never recognize Russia’s annexation of Ukrainian territory,” he added.
Johnson, like his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau, promised to continue aid to Kyiv and the policy of sanctions against Moscow “until Russia ends the war and withdraws its troops”.
