El Telégrafo – Migrants dead in a traffic accident in Mexico

A new traffic accident in which Ecuadorian migrants were allegedly injured has been reported in the state of Puebla, Mexico. According to official information, as a result of this incident, eight migrants died and ten others were injured. The driver of the truck in which 18 undocumented migrants were traveling lost control of the vehicle following a mechanical breakdown.

In this regard, the Deputy Minister of Human Mobility, Silvia Espíndola, indicated through her Twitter social network account that the Consulate of Ecuador in Mexico “is working with local authorities regarding the state of health of Ecuadorian migrants” and that more information will be provided during the day.

According to data shared by the Municipal State Police, in the early hours of Saturday, August 13, 2022, the incident occurred on the Federal Highway in the Azumbilla stretch, before reaching the gas station of the Municipality of Cañada Morelos, where a truck reported theft.

Undocumented travelers from Ecuador, Venezuela and Cuba were transported in the car. Municipal police personnel, along with paramedics from the Advanced Medical Emergency System of the Municipality of Chapulco, Cañada Morelos, and Red Cross rescuers recovered the injured, treated the injured, approximately 10 people. They were transferred to a retirement home.

Authorities have so far not released the nationalities, ages or names of the deceased migrants. However, in the local press in the state of Puebla, they indicated that there would be five adult women, in addition to a girl and two boys.

From this list, three adults and three children died at the scene, while two other migrants died in hospital. Two women would be from Cuba and among the children there would be one under two years old and another about 10 years old.
