Rodrigo Chaves, President of the Republic, has confirmed that he will travel next Saturday to Crucitas de Cutris in San Carlos to know and assess the current ecological damage caused by illegal gold mining.

Chaves Robles’ announcement comes after the magistrates of Chamber IV asked the Ministries of Environment and Health to inform them this week of the actions carried out in recent months in Crucitas, in an attempt to contain the current ecological disaster caused by illegal mining.

The action of unconstitutionality was presented by FECON, considering that to date there is no evidence that there are responses from environmental and public health authorities to contain the destruction caused by gold mining outside the law.

“Let’s go to Crucitas on Saturday. Now we have to put some order in this barbarism, we will inspect with our own eyes, hear with our own ears and breathe with our own noses, what is happening there”, said the Costa Rican president during a press conference.

Last year, the Constitutional Chamber ordered the government to prepare a timetable with the necessary security measures, this would contain illegal mining and stop the disaster that is perceived today.

The current situation in Crucitas arose after the Canadian company Infinito Gold left our country, after the Contentious-Administrative Court canceled the concession granted by the government of Oscar Arias.

Franz Tattenbach, Minister of the Environment, announced that they are working on a more precise roadmap, which they will present at the end of the year taking into account the current scenario in the said border sector.

“Also, I would like to say that there is a plan for monitoring and evaluating the areas where mining activity takes place. This is a notification that the House gave to the previous administration, but there is a multi-ministerial commission working,” said the chief environment officer.

In November 2011, the First Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice upheld the cancellation of the Crucitas mine gold mining concession.

For different social actors, mining activity has serious implications for the environment because it pollutes the air, water and soil. In the case of the Crucitas project, since 2008 it has been pointed out that it violates the right to a healthy, balanced and sustainable environment.
