Alonso and the new F1: “We can fight better, but it’s still too boring”

Misses the fierce fights for the podium of yesteryear

He regrets that only a small group of pilots can win

He applauds the new F1 for allowing him to shine, if only a little

Fernando Alonso gives his verdict on the new Formula 1 rules after the first half of the season. The Spaniard sees an improvement in the fighting but feels that victories are still for the few.

Did the new rules work? Fernando Alonso is not entirely convinced. The Spaniard believes Formula 1 is still too predictable and only a few always win.

“More or less. Unfortunately, Formula 1 is always very predictable. These are Red Bull and Ferrari. Only Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, Carlos Sainz and Sergio Pérez can win. I don’t know of any other sport in which this happens,” Fernando commented in statements for Dutch TV channel NOS.

However, the Spaniard, tempted by the promises of the new rules, recognizes that he can fight more on the track, even if he recalls that there are times when he is in no man’s land.

“Grands Prix have become more fun and with these cars you can fight better. However, I think it’s too boring, but it is also part of F1. There will always be teams that are faster than others.”

“The final phase at Silverstone was sensational, but it was mainly thanks to the safety car. Suddenly I was an eyewitness and I had the vision of the leaders, but there was also a downside: halfway -race, I was sixth in no man’s land. No, it’s very exciting, “he admitted.

Fernando thinks one of the details that dampens the excitement is that Red Bull and Ferrari are ahead of the rest. However, it is fortunate that this new F1 occasionally shows its brilliance.

“A bit. Of course I miss the fierce duels on the podium. Of course, it feels good when I can stand out for a while, like in Canada when I started in the front row with Max. It’s a good thing about this season. I can show things that people no longer expect from me. This has always been my strength and my pride. That’s what drives me: to be a better driver compared to 2021. You also compete in this sport”, said Alonso to conclude.
