The United States Supreme Court overturned the landmark decision – Roe vs. Wade–, which established abortion as a constitutional right in 1973. As a result of this ruling, nearly half of North American states would have to ban or severely restrict access with the power to establish their own laws regarding termination of pregnancy.
As of press time, seven states had already announced moves to ban abortion in their jurisdictions, and seven more said they would do so within the next 30 days. On the contrary, California, in the mouth of its governor Gavin Newson, announced that it would not give in and would defend the rights of women. Their peers in Oregon and Washington also toe this line. The announcement of the Supreme Court’s measure also led Joe Biden to speak: “It is a sad day for the court and for the country, with this decision the United States goes back 150 years.”
Clearly, Trump celebrated. The former president is partly responsible for what happened, like other former Republican leaders – Bush senior and Bush junior –; and the current President of the North American Congress, Nancy Pelosi, reaffirmed it: “The Republican-controlled Supreme Court has achieved the Republican Party’s dark and extreme goal of taking away women’s right to make their own decisions by matters of reproductive health.”
presidential votes. The decision which removes a constitutional right and which – in addition – promotes the illegal and clandestine abortion trade has sparked a wave of criticism from politicians, human rights organizations and celebrities popular and international.
Canadian President Justin Trudeau wrote on Twitter: “The news coming out of the United States is horrible. My heart goes out to the millions of American women who are now on the verge of losing their legal right to abortion. I can’t imagine the fear and anger you are feeling right now. No government, politician or man should tell a woman what she can and cannot do with her body. I want women in Canada to know that we will always stand up for their right to choose. »
For his part, Emmanuel Macron published: “Abortion is a fundamental right of all women. He must be protected. I wish to express my solidarity with the women whose freedoms are violated by the Supreme Court of the United States. He has even already announced that so that France does not retreat like the country of the North, he will seek to ensure that the right to abortion remains in the French Constitution. And Boris Johnson said: ‘I have always believed in a woman’s right to choose, I stand by that view and that is why the UK has the laws it has.
And Hollywood too. Some faces with millions of followers and lots of stage and red carpet also spoke. Selena Gómez felt that “to see how a constitutional right is stripped away is horrible. A woman should have the right to CHOOSE what she wants to do with her own body. End of story.” An anti-Trump activist like Taylor Swift didn’t keep quiet and shared the text written by Michelle Obama against the abortion rights snatch, adding: “I am absolutely terrified that we are here, that after so many decades of fighting for women’s rights over their own bodies, today’s decision took it away from us.” Kim Karadashian was on this line, i.e. he retweeted the text of Michelle and added, “In the United States, guns have more rights than women.”
For her part, Ellen De Generes posted: “Throughout history, women have not been trusted. Not voting, not deciding who they marry, and now not making their own decisions about their bodies. But we won’t let this continue and we will get the rights we deserve.” And actress Viola Davis added, “Now more than ever, we need to use our voice and our power! We the people.” Singers Cardi B, Cindy Lauper, or actresses like Bette Midler and Ariana deBose, were others who showed their rejection.
Similarly, companies such as Disney, Netflix, Paramount, Sony, and Comcast have announced that they will cover travel expenses for employees who must travel for abortions.
The NBA on alert. Coming from the powerful sports sector, they also said they were present to protest. And it prompted a joint statement from the men’s (NBA) and women’s (WNBA) basketball leagues. “The NBA and WNBA believe women should be able to make their own decisions about their health and their future, and we believe freedom should be protected,” said Adam Silver and Cathy Engelbert, executives for both leagues. “We will continue to advocate for gender and health equity, including ensuring that our employees have access to reproductive health care, regardless of location.”
NBA star and Los Angeles Lakers leader LeBron James tweeted that the Supreme Court’s decision was based “absolutely on power and control”. Cruelty is the key, it’s not pro-life, it’s sad and cruel.”
Amidst the whole panorama of social fragmentation, Stephen King’s irony sums up this “achievement” of the United States: “It is the best Supreme Court that the 19th century has produced.
