Chile had not yet been eliminated from the Copa America, had not even lost a player to a double yellow card, and had even less managed to reach five minutes of play when the referee Wilmar Roldán and the VAR members ignited the match between La Roja and Canada.
The reason? Moise Bombito violently elbowed Rodrígo Echeverría in the face, which earned him a direct red card. In addition, the Colombian judge was in front of the play. In the end, absolutely nothing happened, none of the four judges who saw the action found a violation of the rules.
Conmebol speaks to Roldán and VAR
The violation was so obvious that Conmebol could not ignore this situation and, in its traditional audio version of the VAR to explain controversial plays in the match, acknowledged that the video assistant referees had made a serious error.
“The VAR, by using angles and speeds, fails to identify violent behavior and incorrectly confirm the decision on the ground” explained Conmebol.
