Canadian McIntosh wins silver in 400 freestyle

PARIS – Summer McIntosh won Canada's first medal of the Paris Olympics with a silver in the 400-metre freestyle.

Australia's Ariarne Titmus defended her Olympic crown in three minutes and 3:57.49 seconds, ahead of McIntosh in 3:58.37 and bronze medallist Katie Ledecky of the United States in 4:00.86.

McIntosh nearly won her first career Olympic medal in the 400 freestyle as a 14-year-old three years ago in Tokyo but placed fourth.

The Toronto swimmer holds the world record in the women's 400m IM. McIntosh will compete in the event on Monday.

Additionally, defending 100-metre butterfly champion Maggie MacNeil of London, Ont., qualified for the final in that event.

He tied for the fourth time on an empty stomach in the semi-finals.
