A widespread technology outage on Friday, apparently linked to problems at global cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike and Microsoft, disrupted operations at airports, airlines, banks and even hospitals, including several in Canada.
An update to CrowdStrike software appears to have caused problems in systems around the world, with many hospitals reporting being affected by the outage.
Some health care networks in Canada have taken to social media to notify patients of the outage, while Global News has reached out to hospitals across the country by email to assess the impact.
Here is a list of hospitals in Canada affected so far.
University Health Network: Toronto
The University Health Network (RUS), which includes several hospitals and clinics In Ontario, such as Toronto General Hospital and Toronto Western Hospital, announced Friday that they were affected by the outage.
“The global CrowdStrike outage is impacting some UHN systems. Clinical activity continues as planned, but some patients may experience delays. Please contact your care team if you have any questions,” UHN posted on X.
Sunnybrook Hospital: Toronto

Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto is also affected by the outage, a spokesperson told Global News.
“Like many organizations, Sunnybrook was impacted by the global CrowdStrike outage,” the spokesperson said in an email Friday.
“Clinical activity continues as planned at all Sunnybrook sites, but patients may experience delays. Patients scheduled for appointments today should allow additional time and we appreciate your understanding. “Work is underway to restore affected IT systems.”
Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO): Ottawa
CHEO Ottawa was affected by the outage, a spokesperson told Global News Friday.
“While CHEO has been impacted by the global Crowdstrike outage, we are delivering services as planned using alternative solutions where necessary. “We do not anticipate any impact on our services to children and their families today,” the spokesperson said.
Queensway Carleton Hospital: Ottawa
Queensway Carleton Hospital (QCH) in Ottawa was also affected by the outage, a spokesperson told Global News Friday.
“QCH was impacted by the CrowdStrike issue from 1:30am to 5:45am this morning. During this time, we experienced an outage of our electronic medical records system. Staff followed our established downtime mapping procedures and continued to provide excellent care. “The system has since returned to normal operation,” the spokesperson said.
“There is no impact on scheduled services and appointments; “Everything is proceeding as planned,” he added.
Netherlands Health Services: Newfoundland
In an online article Friday, Dutch health services said the outage impacted its main information system used to manage patient care and finances.
“NL Health Services is advising the public that a global IT system issue is affecting some of its IT services across the province. “Currently, multiple IT systems are affected, including Meditech, the primary information system used to manage patient care and financial information,” the release states.
“NL Health Services has implemented contingency plans and is focused on providing emergency care while we work with our global partners to resolve the disruption. This service disruption is expected to impact the availability of some health services. Regular updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
Vancouver Coastal Health: Vancouver
Vancouver Coastal Healthwhich encompasses many health networks in British Columbia, including Mount St. Joseph Hospital and St. Paul's Hospital, said it was affected by the outage.
In an article on X Friday, the regional health author said its health system in British Columbia had been affected by the global Crowdstrike outage.
“Please contact your provider if you have any questions about the care you are providing today,” the message reads.
“Our primary concern is the continuity and quality of patient care. We have implemented contingency plans to ensure our health services remain operational and patient care is not interrupted to the best of our ability. Please check back on our website for updates. If you have any questions about a doctor’s appointment today, please call your health care providers. Please do not call the hospital switchboard at this time.
