AMLO agrees with Trudeau to hear Canadian businesses harmed by electricity reform

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador agreed this Wednesday with the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, to hear the companies of his country which consider themselves harmed by the reform of the electricity sector from which Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) and the Federal Commission benefit of Electricity (CFE) above foreign firms.

In a message ahead of the bilateral meeting between the two leaders, López Obrador said his administration was seeking to resolve any disagreement that its policies in the sector had triggered between businessmen from the United States and Canada.

This dispute is currently in the consultation period under the USMCA and was considered stalled before the meeting of the three North American leaders.

“We talked about the companies that operate in the electricity sector, we seek to resolve the problems, the differences that logically arise when it comes to these economic relations and especially in boom times, because Canadian investments in Mexico are increasing like never before.

“There are certain issues to be discussed and I am committed to receiving companies that may have outstanding issues, disagreements with the attitude of our government, we are always open to dialogue,” declared the federal president to his counterpart.

Before coming to Mexico, Trudeau expressed the need to reiterate to López Obrador the need to respect the agreements signed within the framework of the Trade Agreement between Mexico, the United States and Canada (TMEC) in energy matters.

This issue was marginalized on the agenda of the three leaders during the North American Leaders’ Summit held yesterday at the National Palace.

“We had time to talk about issues of interest to our people, to the people of Canada and Mexico and we discussed economic issues related to investments by Canadian companies in Mexico, mining companies, major companies like TransCanada who invests to build a gas pipeline in the Gulf of Mexico represents an important and very important investment because it will allow gas to be supplied to the southeast of Mexico,” said the man from Tabasco.
