Canadian figure skater Alexandra Paul died last Tuesday after being involved in a road accident in which a truck collided with five vehicles parked in a construction zone.
Paul, 31, died instantly while her baby, who was traveling with her in the backseat, was taken to hospital where he is out of danger.
The deceased was married to Mitchell Islam, who was her artistic partner at the rink and with whom she traveled to 2014 Winter Olympics to represent Canada.
At that Olympic event, held in Sochi, Russia, Paul and Islam didn’t reach the podium in the most important event in the world of sport, but they achieved great success at the national level in Canada, where they won bronze in pairs three times.
News of Alexandra Paul’s untimely passing has shocked a country with a long tradition of ice skating and where both were highly recognized.
They dedicated themselves to training after giving up their professional careers and their lives centered on the little boy they both had less than a year ago.
“It is with great sadness that the Canadian Skating Federation announces the sudden passing of our beloved member Alexandra Paul. A shining star on and off the ice. His dedication, his passion and his remarkable talent have left an indelible mark on the world of figure skating,” wrote the Cadadian organization in the published press release.
