HOLY SUNDAY. The “Queens of the Caribbean” won their second consecutive victory by defeating the Cuban sextet 3 sets by 2 in the closing match of the second round of the Final Six of women’s volleyball which is played in the Olympic Center pavilion for this sport.
The matches ended 25-14, 21-25, 25-16, 22-25 and 15-10 in favor of the quisqueyanas, who had to work hard to maintain their undefeated record of 2-0 in international competition.
Gaila González, with 18 points, and Yonkaira Peña, with 16, were the top scorers for the Dominican sextet, which had Yineiry Martínez and Brayelin Martínez absent due to rest.
The criollas dominated the blocks 46-35, as well as the serves 105-88, while the Cubans led the attacks 127-106.
For Cuba, which puts its record at 1-1, Desiré Madán, with 21 points, was the top scorer, and Greisy Fine had 14.
The tournament continues on Tuesday with matches starting at 3 p.m., weather permitting due to the passage of Storm Franklyn, which is forecast to produce steady showers.
USA 3, PUERTO RICO 0
SANTO DOMINGO.- The United States team defeated in three comfortable sets 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-7) the Puerto Rican team which lost for the second time in this NORCECA Final Six Pan American Cup which is played at the National Volleyball Palace “Ricardo Arias”.
For the winners, Kayla Haneline had 8 points, Madeline Gates added 7 while Stephanie Samedy and Logan Eggleston contributed 6 respectively. For Puerto Rico, the most notable was Camila Soto with four goals.
The Americans vastly outclassed the Puerto Ricans in spikes 26-8 and in blocks 4-1.
MEXICO 3, CANADA 1
HOLY SUNDAY. Mexico established their record at 1-1 after defeating Canada 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 17-25.25-XX) in the first match of the second day of competition at the Pan American Cup six NORCECA finals which takes place in the National Volleyball Pavilion “Ricardo Arias”.
The Mexican offense was led by María Rodríguez who totaled 18 points, followed by Grecia Castro and Karen Rivera with 18 and 14 points respectively. For the Canadian team (0-2) the best were Gabrielle Attieh with 12 points and Kaylee Plouffe and Thana Fayad with 10 points each.
In the points, Mexico outscored Canada 52-38, while in the blocks, the Canadians were 8-5 better.
