What did Aston Martin want to tell him?

Fernando Alonso finished 2nd in the 2023 Canadian F1 GP yesterday in a race where his car took a big step forward thanks to the upgrade package he debuted at the Canadian event. For much of the race, the Spaniard rode behind Max without allowing the Dutchman to extend his lead at the front of the race.something different from what has been seen in previous Grands Prix. And there were even laps in which Fernando cut Verstappen.

However, Fernando Alonso had to stop earlier than expected to defend against Max’s stoppage. He couldn’t stop as long as he wanted. The strategy worked against him as he had no new medium rubber (the best yesterday), tire that Verstappen had. Also, in the next batch, the team asked him to perform the “lift and coast” technique, i.e. lifting the accelerator earlier at the end of the straight to reduce fuel consumption for a possible problem with the fuel system. This made his situation worse.

after all that, Fernando Alonso achieved a magnificent second position, 9 seconds behind Verstappen. And then, a radio message from his engineer caught his eye: “Good job, mate. We know you had a little problem, but you did a good job. Think that without that problem, Verstappen would have…”. It is not known how he would have followed this sentence. Fernando cut it like this: “I know, I know. I didn’t mean anything.”

“Well done guys. I’m happy. I’m happy. We gave it our all again. Good pit stops.”, continued Fernando, who after the race was very happy with the pace of his car and pointed out that the fact that Hamilton passed him at the start and his fight for second place prevented him from closing in on Max. Was that what your engineer meant? Could Alonso push Max more? Did they really believe they could win the race?

Previously, Alonso had already played in another striking radio on the 48th lap, when he had to apply the “lift and coast” technique to reserve gasoline. “Tell me when the ‘lift and coast’ thing is ok. I want to stop doing it”, said the Asturian to his engineer. “Yes we will, but please keep doing it”they answered from the wall. “I want to win the race, mate”said Fernando when he was 5 seconds behind Max.
