WestJet pilots issue strike notice ahead of May long weekend

The WestJet pilots issued a 72-hour notice for the night at the airport management as soon as several pilots showed up at the international airports of Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver during the week, requiring higher salaries and working conditions.

The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), which represents WestJet pilots, said in a statement that the pilots plan to take legal action on Friday, which could include “grounding all aircraft and stopping air operations efficiently”.

The news comes as thousands of Canadians prepare to travel over the May long weekend, so there is some concern.

The notice “starts the 72-hour countdown to negotiate a fair and just contract,” the pilots’ union said.

WestJet responded with a statement saying it would prepare for a work stoppage in the coming days by operating ‘reduced hours’ and ‘offering flexible change and cancellation options for those wishing to make alternative arrangements. “.

“In the event of a flight delay or cancellation, affected passengers will be reimbursed or relocated, as appropriate,” the airline said.

The union previously said the airline had a ‘retention problem’ and was ‘losing pilots at a rate of over 30 per month’, which equates to one WestJet pilot leaving the company ‘every 18 hours at looking for a better job opportunity. .

The WestJet Pilots Association says at least more than 90% of its members have voted in favor of a strike if contract talks fail to reach an agreement before the May long weekend, which kicks off the season summer trips.
